A handyman is the right call for the list — the dozen small repairs and installs every house collects. This page covers what that work includes in Florida, where it stops, and how to hire it well in Broward County.
Doors and hardware: latches, hinges, locks, closers, weatherstripping, and sliding-door rollers and tracks — the single most common coastal Broward repair.
Walls and ceilings: drywall patches from doorknobs, leaks and old anchors; texture matching; small paint jobs and touch-ups; caulking in baths and around exterior openings.
Mounting and assembly: TVs, shelving, mirrors, curtain rods, furniture assembly, closet systems and grab bars.
Fixtures and small swaps: faucets, toilet fill valves and flappers, light fixtures and ceiling fans into existing boxes, cabinet hardware.
Screens, fences and outside: screen and lanai repair, fence-board and gate fixes, mailbox and house-number installs, pressure-washing-adjacent small jobs some handymen offer.
Punch lists: rental turn-overs, pre-sale fixes, and move-in lists — the multi-item visit is where a good handyman earns his keep.
Florida has no state handyman license, and the state reserves whole categories of work for licensed contractors: electrical, plumbing, air conditioning, roofing and structural work. New circuits, panel work, repipes, water heaters, roof repairs and anything that changes the structure are contractor jobs, with permits where the city or county requires them. The Broward handymen in this directory were listed under Google's handyman category — for anything on the licensed side of the line, hire the licensed trade and ask who pulls the permit, in writing.
Every business in this directory sets its own prices, and this page will not invent a going rate for them. In practice you will see three shapes: an hourly rate with a minimum, a per-task price for standard jobs like a TV mount or a faucet swap, and a flat quote for a written list. All three are legitimate. What matters is that the shape and the number are in writing before the first screw turns, along with who supplies materials and what happens if the job uncovers a bigger problem — in older Broward homes, it regularly does.

Minor repairs and maintenance: drywall patches, door and hardware repair, mounting, assembly, fixture swaps, screen repair, small paint and caulk work, and general to-do lists. If the job changes a system — wiring, piping, structure, roof, AC — it is licensed-contractor work in Florida.
State-licensed contractors handle electrical, plumbing, air conditioning, roofing and structural work. A handyman who offers those as side work is offering you a problem — unpermitted, unlicensed work can void insurance and complicate a home sale.
By the hour, by the task, or as a flat quote for a written list. Businesses set their own prices; this directory does not quote prices. Get yours in writing before work starts.
For a small visit, usually you pay when the work is done. For a bigger list involving materials, a deposit toward materials is common. Agree the terms in writing first, and be wary of anyone demanding full payment up front for a small job.
Yes — worn rollers, tracks and handles are classic handyman work, and in coastal Broward they are one of the most common calls thanks to salt and sand. Replacing the whole door unit can cross into licensed and permitted work; ask where the line sits for your job.
TV mounting is everyday handyman work. A ceiling fan swapped into an existing wired box is a common handyman task; adding a new circuit or box where none exists is electrical work for a licensed electrician.
For a first visit, plan to be there at the start to walk the list and at the end to check it. Many Broward handymen do repeat work for owners who are away — agree access and payment terms in writing if you go that route.
Write the full list, clear the work areas, know where your water shutoff and breaker panel are, and have any parts you already bought (fixtures, hardware) on hand. A prepared list is the difference between one trip and three.
